Final Project, Week 2

Time for an update!

After getting the references I needed, I proceeded to get to work, as I have found that I really enjoy modelling, now that I understand more about the mechanics.

For this assignment, we are limited in the number of triangles in our building. Triangles, and not 4-sided polygons, because game engines don't work with 4-sided polygons, but with triangles. With the limit set at 5000 triangles, we are required to build in a different style, using planes instead of solids, and hiding open faces from view.

I managed to get a lot done! I created the building using modular modeling, and I made blank walls, walls with windows, and walls with doors. I then used the sections to fabricate the building. Here are some images of the sections:

From there, I added some features, such as porches, a roof, and caps on the walls to give them a sense of depth when viewed from above. I built a decorative bell tower, complete with a cross, and then modeled the bell. Lastly, I added some projecting timbers from the sides of the building. I currently stand at just over 3100 triangles, which gives me some room to work on a railing for the balcony, some wall sconces, and possibly a courtyard with tombstones. The bell was over HALF of all of my triangles, because round things require more surfaces to look round, but I like it, and so it will stay in the scene.

I textured the walls, windows, doors, and all of the wooden areas. I added a bump map to give the illusion of roughness on the surfaces, and I added the brass and metal textures for the bell. Below is the UV map, which is how the texture will land on the object.

Below is the texture map, which lays below the UV map. The white space is currently empty. I still have a lot of usable space, as well as a full blank space the same size as this one, and I may go back and redesign the textures, once I'm finished with the final modeling.

All of that within the first week!

Here are some rendered images of what I have built so far, close to what they will look like in the final game engine.I added a plane to serve as a place for the shadows to land, but that will be ground in the game engine:

That's it for this week!

I'll have another update next week!
